One of my favorite pandemic activities is answering questions on OK Cupid to feed the algorithm. So today it asked me what I love about my job. Here’s what I said to the algo and to my potential future husbands:
Sometimes it’s the process of software development, working together to build systems none of us could alone. I love talking about SDLC and methodologies. I love hearing and telling war stories about the glorious successes–and especially the glorious failures.
Sometimes it’s immersing myself in new problems or diving deeper into the mysterious crevices of something I thought I understood. I love discovering the language and contours of new domains, designing systems that express and animate them. I love looking back on Hoover Dam projects and being astonished by what we did.
Then I craft a piece of code, and it does exactly what I meant. I can’t imagine a more intoxicating, invigorating feeling.
